Vehicles can cause a number of problems due to Exhaust Back Pressure as it tends to decrease the performance of your vehicle. It will not work properly and you will have to face difficulty. If you are having this problem you need to get your vehicle checked so that you get it repaired by mechanic. There are specific symptoms that you will come across when there is any such problem. You will not get a proper speed when your vehicle is moving around and you will get poor performance of fuel. It means that lot of fuel will be wasted to cover only a short distance. Sometimes it is seen that lot of heat is produced which can increase too.

So when you are facing this problem the best thing that you can do is to measure the pressure. In order to calculate Exhaust Back Pressure there is a device is called as pressure gauge and it is used to get the value of pressure. There is a scale on which you have readings so the scale will tell you the exact reading of the pressure. You can easily find whether the pressure is low or high as you can determine its value. Though it is a difficult task but still you can manage this work will be the help of great precision.

Exhaust Back Pressure

In order to check Exhaust Back Pressure you can read it directly from the scale. Most of the engines should have this reading usually less than 1.5Psi only. This reading can vary from vehicle to vehicle as the value will not remain the same. Sometimes you can even get a single exhaust or you can even find a double exhaust too. You must pay attention to reading so that you can compare value that you find or read from the scale.

Thus you can inspect your system completely so that you are able to remove all flaws which you find in your vehicle. It will be good that you have so many options that you can try to measure pressure and see faults in your system. There is another option too which is availed by many people and is known by vacuum test and is very much popular and used by mechanics.

Exhaust Back Pressure

Any fluid whether gas or liquid while moving in a pipe or tight bends will experience back pressure. It can be termed as a resistance that the fluid or gas experiences in the opposite direction of flow. Due to this resistance the flow of the fluid will be reduced. It is present in numerous situations like in the oil and gas industry where gas or liquids travel in pipeline, reservoir, in the automotive industry which is commonly known as exhaust back pressure as gases escape through exhaust pipe. More emphasis will be put on the one found in the automotive industry. Vehicles have an exhaust system and its importance is to get rid of noxious exhaust gases which are composed of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, phosphorus, trace of heavy metals like lead from your engine, to decrease noise output and in modern cars reduce exhaust emissions. Vehicles have exhaust muffler which causes a high back pressure due to the presence of bends in it. It is believed that high back pressure decreases the performance of four stoke engine and to regulate it simple butterfly valves or fully computer controlled sensing pressure can be fitted in the exhaust pipe itself. However it is believed that in two-stroke engine exhaust back pressure avoid unburned fuel from entering directly into the exhaust system. The pressure in the exhaust system counteracts the pressure of the exhaust gases which are expelled from the cylinder. While excess back pressure in engine reduces engine power, a very low back pressure causes a sharp increase in fuel consumption. The symptoms of too much back pressureare a lack of high speed power, poorfuel economy andalso overheating of engine. Combustion of fuel results in lot of heat and it there is any obstruction to it to escape from the tailpipe, these results in the engine to heat up. In case there is complete blockage in the exhaust, it will be difficult to start and also will idle for a few minutes then die as back pressure builds up and strangles the engine.

Exhaust Back Pressure

The back pressure can be measured using apparatus such as pressure gauge with scale reading from zero to 15 psi or 100 kPa, exhaust back pressure kit or digital manometer can be used to measure back pressure in automobile. Different methods can be used to measure back pressure. If your engine has an air pump you can place the equipment at the air pump check valve and measure it. The oxygen sensor present in the exhaust manifold can also be connected to your pressure gauge. A third method is by making a hole directly into the exhaust pipe a bit in front of the converter and insert your gauge or manometer. Normally at idle time it should be less than 1.5 psi (10 kPa) but it depends on the design of the exhaust system, the size of the pipes, the converter, muffler and if single or dual exhausts. If the back pressure is higher than normal, this means that something is obstructing the flow of exhaust out of the tailpipe.

Exhaust Back Pressure

By reducing the restrictions in the exhaust system exhaust gases can flow easier and thus the pressure decreases. The advantage is that it improves fuel economy and the engine performance. An effective way is to replace the stock muffler by a low restriction performance muffler or replace the entire exhaust system with a free-flowing performance exhaust system.
